- Took ages to load.
Could remove background pinstripes and use 1px tile instead - the pinstripes don't add any value to the site design and you could afford to lose them.

- Perhaps changing the logo tagline would help the user to connect the dots.

- The dark "intro scroller" showing 3 boxes:
The items are not clickable.
One of them says "Subscribe to Events" which seems like a call to action but it's not clickable. This makes for a bito of a missleading user experience.

- I said no to the question "was the purpose of the site obvious" because I've spent some time on the site now and I am still not sure what the site does.
The design is good though.
I think you need a clear message on the home page that outlines what the site does in a few words.
I finally found the answer on the about page as I was writing this comment, and I think you can condense the top line there to a heading that will explain this to your users.

- Following up on my previous comment about making the message clear, add mentioning "Plan your night: find party wear, restaurants and activities" (this is not a good heading, but I'm making a suggestion in the lines of...)

- I think the search speed was fast enough, contrary to what previous reports might say.
I suggest you try this out using a friends connection just to be sure (these things are hard to benchmark).
I searched for the term "test" and got some results (it picked up on La"test" news)

- Something that bugged me a bit: I set out to use the site to plan a night out. The first thing I wanted to do was find an event. I selected "Events" from "Home" | "Directory" | "Events". I want to find an event in London but there is no way for me to specify the location. I think a filter to select either postcode or location would be paramount in this case. It has to be more detailed than just the city, because London is too big, I might want to find things either in Central London or in Covent garden, but not in the outskirts of greater London.

- I have to confess I've read "Nightwear" where it said "Nightweaver". Check if other people are as blind as me (get a group of people who haven't seen the site before, show them the link briefly and then hide it and ask them "what did it say")

- Okay after spending more time on the site now I am getting the idea that this is a site for creating a party, not planning a night out for you and your lady friend.
Maybe let the users add things to a checklist or some kind of a bookmark. So if I wanted to plan a party, I would go into my account and select something like "Create a party" and then give it a name "Tonys Stag Night". Then add things under this heading, like restaurants etc.
On top of that, it would be good if you could add notes and have a check box for "Has been booked" so you can really use it to plan things. This is just a suggestion and it might go completely away from your business model.

- After all these comments I feel inclined to tell you that the site looks good though. I would stay away from letting it become "yet another directory site", because you have obviously put alot of effort and time into design and it's a nice site.
